Molly Moon’s & Union Coffee [FREE] Pop Up

Molly Moon’s is a local favorite in Seattle. They recently teamed up with Union Coffee (another local Seattle business) and hosted a few FREE pop-ups to share their creation.

The love child of this holy union? Cold Brew Ice Cream.

We visited the Capital Hill location on Saturday, August 18th to check out this latest flavor and try their affogato! An affogato is a scoop of ice cream with fresh espresso poured over the top – a divine treat for any coffee-lover. If you’ve never had one, it’s a must try.

The pop up was set up right outside Molly Moon’s shop on the sidewalk. The treats were FREE if you can believe it. I went to the pop-up fully intending to pay, and was pleasantly surprised to hear this when we pulled out our wallets.

This Cold Brew Ice Cream has a pretty special back story. The owners of Molly Moon’s and Union Coffee are actually husband and wife. They worked together to create a unique roast just for this ice cream. The beans are roasted by a third local business - Olympia Coffee Roasting – making this creamy creation a truly local Pacific Northwest treat.

The process of making this ice cream was also different than most coffee ice creams. Molly Moon’s explains, “rather than infuse milk and cream with ground coffee beans, we use the beans to make a highly concentrated cold brew that we mix into our milk, cream and sugar. In other words, our head chef actually figured out how to make the ice cream base out of cold brew!”

So how did it taste?

Cold Brew in general tends to taste metallic to me – so I wasn’t sure if I was going to love this ice cream or not. I opted to get just the scoop of ice cream rather than the affogato so I could really taste all the flavor notes of the ice cream. I was not disappointed. It had a subtle and very smooth caramel cold brew flavor to it – not metallic at all. I did enjoy it! It was a perfect summer treat. They also added handmade chocolate jimmy sprinkles on top. Honestly, I could have done without the sprinkles – but I’m not a fan of sprinkles typically.
